About Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs)
The Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act (signed into law
in1986) retains a state's right to issue a driver's license but
establishes minimum national standards when licensing CMV
drivers. The Act makes it illegal to hold more than one license and
requires states to adopt testing and licensing standards. The CDL
program places requirements on the CMV driver, the employing
motor carriers, and the states. Read more on the Commercial
